The Olympias clue

Millie Slavidou

2018

Travelling to Greece to stay with her aunt for a while, Lucy, a British girl, finds from the first day in the new country the excitement and the chances this country gives to innovative and curious minds. Lucy arrives in Alexandroupoli and it is a real luck not only for her, but also for the Greek culture that her aunt’s house is near Parmenion park. In this park, Lucy meets a boy and finds an ancient coin. The coin leads her to a huge discovery, a very important discovery, which also makes her very famous.

The text is accompanied with real Instagram posts, which give a fresh and modern aura to the text. There is also an English-Greek glossary, which of course helps the readers understand the Greek phrases which are very well and harmonically set in the text. The author highly raises the importance of the good use of internet and of the electronic devices among teenagers. The heroine googles whenever she needs to find a historical clue; she uses her phone in a good manner:

“Armed once again with her phone, Lucy searched for the snake. She tried the obvious first, typing “Olympias snake”. Amazingly, this was the right approach. She soon found herself reading an article about how the young princess Myrtale became a devotee of a snake cult that became an important part of her life.”

“Later that evening, Lucy took out her phone to do some research, wondering how people coped before the internet.”

One of the most important things in this book is that the author has the aunt involved in the whole situation, when things seem to turn out serious enough. The aunt respects the law and asks the state archaeologists for help. It is very crucial to show to the children that they need the adults’ help, that they should respect the law and that they are not super humans.

The “Olympias clue” by Millie Slavidou is an excellent written book, with literal language, in a third person point of view, in a historical and lineal way of narration. It is a treasure for the Greek culture that such an interesting and excellent English book with so many literal and ethical qualities praises the ancient Greek heritage and illuminates the history of Alexandroupolis and so makes Greece famous worldwide.

Millie Slavidou is a British writer and translator who has spent the last 19 years living and working in Greece. She writes educational articles on language and etymology, primarily for pre-teens, as well as having produced a the Lucy Evans Instaexplorer series of books aimed at stimulating the young reader to learn more about other places and take an interest in other languages through a thoroughly modern, smart-phone wielding teen. She has also written books for younger readers. Millie is an ardent supporter of bilingualism in children, and promotes this through her work.

She lives in Evros, northern Greece, with her husband and three children.
